What is String Interpolation?
The concept of string interpolation is the ability to integrate a string with elements to make it more dynamic. Say, for example, that you want to print out a person’s name in a welcome message for your application. There are a few ways to do this in any programming language, so today we’re going to do it in JavaScript.
Best Practices
Let’s say we have an object with some user information:
If we want to print out a welcome message that might look something like “Welcome, Andrew!”, this is one way to do it:
But this looks really cumbersome and can get very messy if you start trying to interpolate more than one variable into the string. Luckily, there is a better way!
A lot better! Here are a couple of main differences:
- You need to use back ticks (`) instead of single quotes (‘) or double quotes (“) for this method
- Instead of “+”, you would write “${}” and put your variable between the curly braces
Let’s take this one more step. If you’re using object values to populate the string, then using the method above can still require you to write a lot of code if you were to use multiple values.
So, let’s wrap things up with some object deconstruction to reduce duplicate code.
